Limb Vascular Responsiveness to 3-Adrenergic Receptor Stimulation in Patients With Congestive Heart Failure
نویسندگان
چکیده
Background. In patients with congestive heart failure, the chronotropic and inotropic responses to f3-adrenergic agonists are reduced. It is not known whether desensitization of peripheral ,B-adrenoceptors accounts for impaired limb vasodilation in these patients. Accordingly, we studied 14 normal subjects and 13 age-matched patients with congestive heart failure. Methods and Results. To distinguish vasodilation mediated by 3-adrenoceptors and adenylate cyclase from that mediated by stimulation of guanylate cyclase, each subject received intrabrachial artery infusions of isoproterenol (1-100 ng/min) and sodium nitroprusside (0.3-10 ,ug/min), respectively. Forearm blood flow was determined by venous occlusion plethysmography. Maximal vasodilative potential, determined during reactive hyperemia, was reduced in the patients with congestive heart failure. The maximal forearm blood flow response to isoproterenol

متن کاملImplications for Congestive Heart Failure
The interaction of the renin-angiotensin system and the sympathetic nervous system in patients with congestive heart failure is not well understood. We tested the hypothesis that angiotensinconverting enzyme inhibitors can resensitize the fJ-adrenergic receptor system. Guinea pigs were given captopril, isoproterenol, or both for 2 weeks. At death, cardiac sarcolemmal and light vesicle fractions...
متن کاملa2-Adrenoceptor Stimulation in Patients With Congestive Heart Failure
Background The a-adrenergic component of the sympathetic nervous system plays a major role in the pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, and natural history of human congestive heart failure (CHF). However, the functional integrity of vascular aland a2-adrenoceptors in CHF remains to be elucidated. The present study was designed to assess the vascular responsiveness of aland a2-adrenoceptors...
متن کاملChronic 3-Adrenoceptor Blockade Prevents the Development of j3-Adrenergic Subsensitivity in Experimental Right-Sided Congestive Heart Failure in Dogs
Background. The reductions of myocardial 83-adrenergic receptor density and responsiveness to catecholamines in congestive heart failure are associated with excessive sympathetic stimulation. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the myocardial changes could be prevented by /3-receptor blockade. Methods and Results. We administered the oral /3-receptor blocking agent nadolol (40 mg...
متن کاملEffects of 3-Adrenergic Stimulation With Dobutamine on Isovolumic Relaxation in the Normal and Failing Human Left Ventricle
Background. We tested the hypothesis that f-adrenergic receptor-stimulated acceleration of left ventricular (LV) isovolumic relaxation (i.e., positive lusitropic response) is attenuated in patients with severe congestive heart failure (CHF) compared with patients without LV dysfunction or CHF. Methods and Results. The f3-adrenergic agonist dobutamine was infused by the intracoronary route in 14...
